Define scope and roles
The organization determines that an important decision needs to be made, often initiated by the person who wants a decision made. A decision manager is assigned to run the process.
They define and document the decision, then assign roles to the relevant people.
Decision data analysis
The people providing the input - usually analysts or subject experts - review the decision definition.
They review the options, gather the data and provide analysis of each option.
Recommend and agree
The decision manager reviews the analysis and creates a data-driven summary and recommendation.
The recommendation is reviewed to ensure it meets required conditions, and if not, it is revise.
Review and decide
The person making the decision reviews the recommendation, and requests clarification if required.
Once satisfied, the decider makes a clear decision.
The decision is communicated to all stakeholders and the organisation is committed to action.
Implement decision
Once the decider has committed the organization to action implementation can commence.
The implementation person/team provides updates to the decider during implementation.
Retrospective review
After implementation a Retrospective (or post-mortem) review of the decision is conducted by the decider.
